What is Calisthenics?
Calisthenics is a mix of dance, gymnastics, ballet and more! Calisthenics has a strong focus on teamwork, discipline of the mind and body, competitive spirit and self-discipline. Calisthenics promotes an appreciation of music and rhythm, deportment and flexibility, along with the excitement of stage presentation. Teams compete in 6 routines annually:
• Free Exercises – development of strength and flexibility through gymnastics-style moves.
• Aesthetic Exercises – ballet positions used to portray a story using mime, grace, deportment and facial expressions.
• Marching - Deportment marching routines using patterns
• Rods- exercises using thin metal rod, manipulating and twirling to music, encouraging coordination.
• Clubs- exercises swinging two clubs in unison and patterns
• Fancy - a rotation item which changes each year and may include song and dance, gymnastics, character dance, modern dance etc.
